The results now presented promise to strengthen the Alentejo agricultural sector's ability to respond to emerging phytosanitary threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the day <strong>October 23rd<\/strong>, The <strong>final project workshop<\/strong>, The event brought together researchers, producers and technicians to share results and reflect on the future of genomic surveillance in Portuguese agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A pioneering genomic surveillance center<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During AlViGen, the <strong>Alentejo's first genomic surveillance center<\/strong>, an infrastructure with capacity for <strong>early detection of diseases<\/strong> in strategic crops such as <strong>wheat<\/strong> and <strong>olive grove<\/strong>. This breakthrough marks a decisive step towards a <strong>more precise, sustainable and science-based agriculture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results and scientific contributions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Using <strong>innovative molecular tools<\/strong>, the project team succeeded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Identify pathogenic fungi<\/strong> before visible symptoms appear on the plants;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Characterizing yellow rust strains<\/strong>, genetically linking them to others known at a global level;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Detecting resistance genes<\/strong> in wheat to the strains currently present in Portugal;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Developing diagnostic methods<\/strong> able to distinguish the different species of the fungus that causes gafa in olive groves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During the workshop, the potential of the <strong>analysis of the airborne fungi community<\/strong> as a tool for <strong>early warning<\/strong> for multiple pathogens, allowing for more effective and preventive management of crop diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From research to practical application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The event ended with a debate on how <strong>transform AlViGen results<\/strong> in a <strong>detection and warning service<\/strong> accessible to the agricultural sector.
