In addition to the economic component, pests and diseases are responsible for practices with significant environmental impacts, such as the application of phytopharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next few years, several new pests and diseases are expected to arrive in Portugal, so the sooner they are detected, the quicker control programs can be implemented. In addition, there are pests and diseases that are like occasional unwelcome visitors. One example is the fungus <em>Puccinia striiformis<\/em>, The disease, which causes yellow rust on wheat, has had a particular impact on the Alentejo and Extremadura regions of Spain, two of the poorest regions in Europe, whose economy is largely dependent on agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"283\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1249d729-4788-4341-bb12-5ac8b8857856.png?strip=all&resize=283%2C371\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8523\" style=\"width:310px;height:406px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Leaf with the fungus <em>Puccinia striiformis<\/em> f.sp. tritici, responsible for the yellow rust disease that threatens wheat.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To meet this challenge, it is essential that regions have the capacity to detect the different species or strains of pathogens circulating in the environment at an early stage. This will only be possible through the application of genomic surveillance to agriculture, a unique methodology capable of answering two key questions: \u201cis pathogen X present in the environment?\u201d and \u201cwhich organisms are present in the environment?\u201d. Genomic surveillance also makes it possible to identify characteristics such as resistance to fungicides\/pesticides or virulence genes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SYNOPSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project AlViGen: Creation of a hub in ALentejo for the GENomic VIgilance of diseases in agriculture, led by InPP in partnership with the University of \u00c9vora, is one of the winners of the 4th edition of the Promove Program of the \u201cla Caixa\u201d Foundation, in collaboration with Banco BPI and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), in the category of innovative pilot projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of the project is to create the first genomic surveillance center in the Alentejo, capable of quickly and accurately diagnosing diseases of various relevant agricultural crops, such as yellow rust in wheat and gafa in olive groves, allowing possible outbreaks to be contained. In addition, this project aims to characterize disease-causing fungi, particularly in terms of virulence and resistance to fungicides or pesticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data generated through genomic surveillance in this project serves as the basis for the development of disease risk prediction and early detection models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The genomic surveillance service of the AlViGen hub could benefit agricultural producers in the management of crop pests and diseases and government authorities or non-governmental organizations in the implementation of policies that minimize the risks of pest transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OBJECTIVES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. implement the AlViGen genomic surveillance center at the InPP, providing it with the equipment, human resources and technical training necessary for its operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. To help reduce economic losses caused by phytosanitary problems in agriculture and to better manage the application of pesticides, reducing their environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. To help strengthen cooperation between Portugal and Spain in monitoring agricultural crop diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Promote the benefits of genomic surveillance applied to disease detection in agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Create an early genomic surveillance service to be offered to agricultural producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ACTIVITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Creation of an AlViGen center based at InPP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Setting up spore traps and collecting samples during the production cycle of wheat and olives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/en\/2022\/11\/sampling-and-characterization-of-colletotrichum-strains-in-olives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Development of the genomic surveillance methodology for gafa in olive groves, which will involve the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of strains of <em>Colletotrichum<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Application of the genomic surveillance methodology for yellow rust in wheat and gafa in olive groves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Para podermos monitorizar as estirpes de <em>Colletotrichum <\/em>presentes no olival e retirar informa\u00e7\u00e3o \u00fatil dessa monitoriza\u00e7\u00e3o, precisamos ter uma associa\u00e7\u00e3o entre o genoma e o fen\u00f3tipo dessas estirpes. Dessa forma, quando aplicarmos a vigil\u00e2ncia gen\u00f3mica ao <em>Colletotrichum<\/em> e identificarmos um determinado gen\u00f3tipo, poderemos identificar tamb\u00e9m as suas caracteristicas fenot\u00edpicas. Por exemplo, a sua virul\u00eancia ou padr\u00e3o de resist\u00eancia a fungicidas.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Para podermos ter esta associa\u00e7\u00e3o entre a gen\u00e9tica e o fen\u00f3tipo do <em>Colletotrichum<\/em>, estamos a trabalhar em conjundo com o grupo de Ros\u00e1rio F\u00e9lix, professora da Universidade de \u00c9vora, no isolamento e caracteriza\u00e7\u00e3o de estirpes de <em>Colletotrichum<\/em> isolados por todo o pa\u00eds. Como tal, vimos pedir ajuda da comunidade para que nos envie amostras de azeitona para que possamos caracterizar o <em>Colletotrichum <\/em>presente no vosso olival!<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>O processo \u00e9 muito simples:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>1.&nbsp; Coloque 10 azeitonas num saco (de uma \u00fanica variedade) na altura da mudan\u00e7a de cor (com ou sem sintomas)<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>2. As armadilhas permitem captar esporos e&nbsp;identificar as esp\u00e9cies de fungos que circulam no ar e, em particular, as variantes do fungo&nbsp;<em>Puccinia striiformis<\/em> f.sp.&nbsp;<em>tritici<\/em>, causador da ferrugem amarela no trigo, bem como as suas caracter\u00edsticas de virul\u00eancia e resist\u00eancia a fungicidas.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>No total, as armadilhas de esporos foram instaladas em oito campos de trigo do Alentejo (Alto, Central e Baixo) e da Extremadura Espanhola, duas das regi\u00f5es mais pobres da Europa, cuja economia \u00e9 largamente dependente da agricultura, e nas quais o fungo <em>Puccinia striiformis<\/em> f.sp.&nbsp;<em>tritici<\/em> tem tido particular impacto.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>O objetivo da instala\u00e7\u00e3o destes campos de trigo \u00e9 implementar uma rede transfronteiri\u00e7a de armadilhas que captem esporos do ar e que permitam detetar precocemente os fungos que circulam no ar. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>A equipa recolhar\u00e1 amostras com uma periodicidade semanal\/quinzenal, durante 3 meses por ano, durante o ciclo produtivo do trigo.
