However, more than 50% of production can be lost every year due to three main pathogens: <em>Stemphylium vesicarium<\/em>, <em>Rosellinia necatrix <\/em>(both fungi) and <em>Erwinia amylovora<\/em> (bacteria). Controlling these pathogens often involves preventative applications of fungicides. As such, tools that allow producers to predict the risk of infection earlier and more accurately can help them avoid losing crops, while reducing the application of treatments, with economic and environmental benefits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project \u201cDIMAP: A digital ecosystem for integrated disease management in pear orchards\u201d was born in 2021 with the aim of building a consortium and network to develop these solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/pear_trees-1024x454.png?strip=all&resize=769%2C340\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6327\" width=\"769\" height=\"340\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SYNOPSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with most agricultural products, pests and diseases generate high economic losses for pear producers, through loss of production and the costs associated with disease management (Table 1). O <em>Stemphylium vesicarium<\/em>, a <em>Rosellinia necatrix<\/em> and <em>Erwinia amylovora<\/em> are the etiological agents of stenphylliosis, root rot and fire blight (respectively). These diseases can lead to loss of fruit production and tree morbidity or mortality. Although some of the factors that promote these diseases are common, there is also substantial variability between pathogens in terms of the symptoms caused and the factors that contribute to infection (e.g. weather conditions or the availability of disease vectors, among others).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Table 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Tabela_PT-1-1024x407.png?strip=all&resize=800%2C318\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6344\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As such, an early detection system (prior to visible symptoms) for each of the three diseases must be able to integrate data from multiple sources. DIMAP was created with the development of such a system in mind and was funded through the project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartagrihubs.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SmartAgriHubs<\/a>, funded by the European program Horizon 2020, through the call for tenders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartagrihubs.eu\/opencall\/SmartAgriHubs-OpenCall-Fiche-PREPARE-V09.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PREPARE<\/a>, which supported projects in the early stages of development to set up a consortium and prepare a project plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to InnovPlantProtect (InPP), DIMAP has the following partners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Producers and Producers' Associations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apas.com.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">APAS<\/a>: Sobrena Agricultural Producers Association<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/perarocha.pt\/anp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ANP<\/a>: National Association of Rocha Pear Producers<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/fnop.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FNOP<\/a>: National Federation of Fruit and Vegetable Producers' Organizations<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omelro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Blackbird<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Competence Centers and Private R&amp;D Institutions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cothn.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COTHN<\/a>: National Horticultural Operational and Technological Center<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.sfcolab.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SFCoLab<\/a>: Smart Farm CoLAB<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochacenter.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cRocha\u201d Center<\/a>: Center for Postharvest and Technology<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Academic Institutions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isa.ulisboa.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ISA<\/a>: Instituto Superior de Agronomia<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esaelvas.pt\/pt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESAE<\/a>: Elvas School of Agriculture<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small and medium-sized enterprises:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/biomemakers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biome Makers<\/a> (Spain\/USA)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/terra-pro.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TerraPro<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OBJECTIVES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main aims of the project are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>identify synergies between partners;<\/li><li>identify the most promising technological approaches for the early detection of diseases;<\/li><li>define the most suitable machine learning\/artificial intelligence algorithms to integrate the different data sources and design the structure of these algorithms;<\/li><li>identify orchards to be sampled in order to train, test and validate the disease prediction models.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ACTIVITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to achieve the project's objectives, DIMAP is structured around the following phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Review of the state of the art and creation of technology transfer reports, with information on:<br \/>1.1 Each of the pathogens, following a structure similar to the pest survey cards in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EFSA<\/a> (Reports available for: <a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DIMAP_ErwiniaAmylovora_TechnologyTransferReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bacterial fire<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DIMAP_StemphyliumVesicarium_TechnologyTransferReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stenphylosis<\/a> e <a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DIMAP_RoselliniaNecatrix_TechnologyTransferReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">root rot<\/a>);<br \/>1.2 The technologies available for early detection and risk mapping.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Realization of a <em>workshop<\/em> with all the partners, to discuss information on the diseases and the technologies that can be used to detect them, using the previously indicated reports as a basis (held in Elvas on December 2 and 3, 2021).<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Testing technologies on a small scale. The results of <em>workshop<\/em> will be used to identify technologies for small-scale testing, in order to identify the most promising for inclusion in a large-scale proposal.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Preparing a project. A discuss\u00e3o final serviu para definir os pr\u00f3ximos passos do projeto, nomeadamente a identifica\u00e7\u00e3o das tecnologias que ser\u00e3o testadas no DIMAP, de modo preliminar, com vista a serem inclu\u00eddas num futuro projeto de cria\u00e7\u00e3o de um sistema de apoio \u00e0 decis\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>O DIMAP foi o \u00fanico projeto portugu\u00eas aprovado no \u00e2mbito da linha PREPARE do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartagrihubs.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SmartAgriHubs<\/a>, uma rede de organiza\u00e7\u00f5es que colaboram de modo a promover a digitaliza\u00e7\u00e3o do setor agro-alimentar e a intera\u00e7\u00e3o entre diferentes atores deste ramo de atividade.
