Enhancing the territory<\/strong> - in pursuit of the National Environmental Education Strategy (<a href=\"https:\/\/enea.apambiente.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ENEA 2020<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>Increase visibility and public perception of the value of natural heritage and ecosystem services <\/strong>- contributing to objective 1.10 of the National Strategy for Nature Conservation and Biodiversity 2030 (<a href=\"https:\/\/dre.pt\/dre\/detalhe\/resolucao-conselho-ministros\/55-2018-115226936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ENCNB 2030<\/a>)<br \/><br \/>The full articulation between ENEA 2020 and ENCNB 2030 aims to foster a civic culture that considers these two objectives and promotes the appropriation of the values of this capital by society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-id=\"4911\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/05_scaled-1024x683.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C534\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4911\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"4989\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_4468-1024x683.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C534\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4989\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-id=\"4991\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_4570_scaled-1024x683.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C534\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4991\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SYNOPSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">InnovPlantProtect (InPP) was one of the winners, with the project \u201c<strong>The word to chestnut trees: educate them to know, protect and monitor them through IoT technology\u201d<\/strong>, This consists of the implementation of an experimental and innovative environmental education program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This pilot is aimed at chestnut producers (belonging to the CastCoa association - Associa\u00e7\u00e3o de Produtores de Castanha do Coa), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cm-sabugal.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sabugal Town Hall<\/a> (CMS) and the municipality's high school graduates, who are about to choose their future profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Producers face the challenge of obtaining timely information that allows them to act on management issues. The municipality also needs information to make environmental policy decisions, and to plan the safeguarding and enhancement of local resources in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 12th graders, who could be the next generation of chestnut producers, will learn about the importance of the chestnut tree, inspired by the reconciliation of technology and sustainability concepts, and will learn how to take care of this natural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/11_scaled-1024x426.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C332\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4905\" style=\"width:823px;height:342px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OBJECTIVES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a><\/a>The project focuses on chestnut trees as local natural capital, focusing on how the trees respond to changes in the surrounding natural environment and anthropogenic pressures - and how these can damage the health of the groves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main novelty of the educational program is the application of digital 4.0 technology, based on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/en\/2021\/11\/o-sistema-iot-internet-of-things-por-detras-dos-sensores-tree-talker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cInternet of Things\u201d<\/a><\/strong> (IoT), to support and add value to traditional teaching methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trees will be the ones communicating their state of health, thanks to the TreeTalker sensors, created by the Italian company Nature 4.0. Installed around the trunk, the sensors will analyze the water consumption of the chestnut trees (through sap flow), biomass growth (diameter), stem humidity, absorbed solar radiation and the state of health of the leaves through spectral indices (light reflection).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-id=\"4993\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/19_scaled-1024x683.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C534\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4993\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-id=\"4997\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/30_scaled-1024x683.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C534\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4997\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-id=\"4995\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/25_scaled-1024x683.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C534\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4995\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ACTIVITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project included the following activities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/en\/2021\/11\/instalacao-de-sensores-em-castanheiros-no-soito-e-em-foios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nature 4.0 Training Course<\/a><\/strong> on the operation and installation of TreeTalkers. The training was followed by the installation of 20 sensors in two study areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/en\/2021\/11\/recursos-a-palavra-aos-castanheiros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Presentations<\/a><\/strong> on the biology of the chestnut tree, the role of IoT sensors as tools for monitoring tree health and the ecosystem services provided by chestnut trees. The presentations were followed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/en\/2021\/11\/alunos-do-sabugal-conhecem-projeto-a-palavra-aos-castanheiros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a series of activities<\/a><\/strong> in one of the study areas, designed to give students the opportunity to \u201cstep into the shoes\u201d of researchers for a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/en\/2022\/01\/educacao-ambiental-com-os-produtores-de-castanha-associados-da-castcoa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seminar<\/a><\/strong> about the <a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/06_InPP_pragas_doencas-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">progress of science<\/a> on solutions to limit the negative impact of the main chestnut pests and diseases. It included a description of the best management practices for chestnut and chestnut trees, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/05_InPP_Castanheiros_conhecer_proteger.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">natural capital<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All <a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/en\/2021\/11\/recursos-a-palavra-aos-castanheiros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>RESOURCES<\/strong><\/a> (videos, presentations and other materials) produced during this project will be available for download.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p Esta evolu\u00e7\u00e3o foi efetuada pelo Departamento de Monitoriza\u00e7\u00e3o e Diagn\u00f3stico, no \u00e2mbito do projeto \u201cEducar para conhecer, proteger e monitorizar os castanheiros atrav\u00e9s da tecnologia IoT\u201d, cofinanciado pelo Fundo Ambiental e liderado pelo InnovPlantProtect (InPP) em colabora\u00e7\u00e3o com a C\u00e2mara Municipal do Sabugal (CMS).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>A aplica\u00e7\u00e3o da tecnologia conhecida como <a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/2021\/11\/o-sistema-iot-internet-of-things-por-detras-dos-sensores-tree-talker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cInternet das Coisas\u201d<\/a> (IoT, do ingl\u00eas Internet of Things) \u00e9 a principal novidade deste <a href=\"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/innov-projects\/educar-para-proteger-os-castanheiros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">programa inovador de educa\u00e7\u00e3o ambiental<\/a>. Os sensores TreeTalker, instalados \u00e0 volta do tronco, permitem a monitoriza\u00e7\u00e3o em tempo real das condi\u00e7\u00f5es fitossanit\u00e1rias das \u00e1rvores, detetando o consumo de \u00e1gua (atrav\u00e9s do fluxo de seiva), o crescimento da biomassa (di\u00e2metro), a humidade do caule, a radia\u00e7\u00e3o solar absorvida e o estado de sa\u00fade das folhas atrav\u00e9s de \u00edndices espectrais (reflex\u00e3o da luz).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>A C\u00e2mara Municipal do Sabugal acaba de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cm-sabugal.pt\/educar-para-conhecer-proteger-e-monitorizar-os-castanheiros-atraves-da-tercnologia-iot-uma-aposta-do-municipio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">divulgar o projeto<\/a>. Por acaso, a apresenta\u00e7\u00e3o coincidiu com a Cimeira do Clima COP 26, relacionando-se na perfei\u00e7\u00e3o com os principais temas em discuss\u00e3o em Glasgow, Esc\u00f3cia.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Na parte da tarde, os alunos foram levados at\u00e9 um souto utilizado como \u00e1rea de estudo pela equipa do InPP e da CMS. Foi l\u00e1 que puderam ver e perceber de forma direta como funcionam os sensores de IoT.
