{"id":4167,"date":"2021-07-23T16:10:09","date_gmt":"2021-07-23T16:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/?post_type=iplantprotect_proj&#038;p=4167"},"modified":"2025-08-05T11:57:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T11:57:12","slug":"ia-alerta-e-deteca-precoce-montado-dehesa","status":"publish","type":"iplantprotect_proj","link":"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/en\/iplantprotect_proj\/ia-alerta-e-detecao-precoce-montado-dehesa\/","title":{"rendered":"AI applied to an early warning and detection system for Phytophthora cinnamomi in cork oak forests\/shrublands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strengthening scientific and technological cooperation in priority areas for border areas is important for both Portugal and Spain, with a view to enhancing and sustainably developing the environmental, economic and societal resources of these regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, within the framework of the Mission, Vision and Values it pursues, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacaolacaixa.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">la Caixa\u201c Foundation\u201d<\/a> launched, for the third year, the Promove Program - The Future of the Interior, in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bancobpi.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BPI<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fct.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Foundation for Science and Technology<\/a>. The aim is to support innovative initiatives in strategic areas for the development of Portugal's inland regions, which can be replicated in other regions with similar characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The application of monitoring and warning systems in large forest patches, using digital robotic and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies on a large scale, was the theme within which InnovPlantProtect (INPP) framed this two-year project, which was one of the winners of the 2020 edition of the Promove Program: \u201cAI applied to a prediction and early detection system for forest fires\". <em>Phytophthora cinnamomi<\/em> in dehesa ecosystems\/ <em>dehesa<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"562\" data-id=\"8331\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1633017725536.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C450\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8331\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SYNOPSIS<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Portuguese montado is an agropastoral system similar to the Spanish one <em>dehesa<\/em>, both recognized for their cultural, economic and ecological value. The cork oak (<em>Quercus suber<\/em>) and the holm oak (<em>Quercus rotundifolia<\/em>), two of the representative species of this cross-border ecosystem (Alentejo, Extremadura and Andalusia), allow us to enjoy various services, such as the production of cork and firewood, food for animal species (black pigs and cattle), carbon sequestration, reduction of soil erosion, habitat for rare and endemic species, as well as being important recreational spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Portugal and Spain, the montado\/ <em>dehesa<\/em> has been suffering a worrying decline for several years. The cause of this decline is not always clear and is due to various factors, such as high water stress, poor nutrients in the soil, overgrazing, poor land management and the presence of pests and diseases. One in particular, the oomycete <em>Phytophtora cinnamomi<\/em> (Pc), a parasitic fungus-like organism introduced to Europe at the beginning of the 18th century, has been identified as one of the main pathogens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent studies based on remote sensing techniques, spatio-temporal epidemiological analysis at the landscape level and assessment of fragmentation and connectivity in forest ecosystems have contributed to a better understanding of the action of the <em>Phytophtora cinnamomi<\/em> as the cause of the disease known as cork oak decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" data-id=\"5366\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1631724174060.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C600\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5366\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" data-id=\"5370\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1633609125942.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C600\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5370\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" data-id=\"5368\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1632137289324.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C600\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5368\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OBJECTIVES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed project aims to use the latest digital remote sensing and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to develop an early warning and detection system and spatial transmission models for PC outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three study areas: two in Portugal (Avis and Ourique municipalities) and one in Spain (Alcuescar). Two producer associations are involved in the project as <em>stakeholders<\/em>: a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.porcoalentejano.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ACPA<\/a> - Association of Alentejo Pig Breeders and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aflosor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aflosor<\/a> - Agro-Forestry Association of the Ponte de Sor Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>ACTIVITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to achieve the planned objectives, the project takes the form of various activities. No total, mais de 2,5 milh\u00f5es de euros ser\u00e3o destinados pela Funda\u00e7\u00e3o \u201dla Caixa\u201d, BPI e Funda\u00e7\u00e3o para a Ci\u00eancia e a Tecnologia (FCT), no \u00e2mbito deste programa, para o desenvolvimento das regi\u00f5es do interior de Portugal.<br \/><br \/>Resultado de uma colabora\u00e7\u00e3o entre Portugal e Espanha, o projeto liderado pelo InPP, laborat\u00f3rio colaborativo (CoLAB) com sede em Elvas, visa desenvolver e testar, em ambos os pa\u00edses, um sistema de alerta e dete\u00e7\u00e3o precoce (Early Detection Warning System, ou EDWS, na sigla inglesa) para controlar a dispers\u00e3o da doen\u00e7a do decl\u00ednio do montado, que afeta estes ecossistemas de forma irrevers\u00edvel.<br \/><br \/>A doen\u00e7a \u00e9 causada por um organismo f\u00fangico (um oomiceto) chamado Phytophthora cinnamomi e assume um car\u00e1ter preocupante dada a import\u00e2ncia do montado\/ dehesa nas economias local e global tanto portuguesas como espanholas. O montado\/ dehesa fornece servi\u00e7os como a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de corti\u00e7a e lenha, alimento para esp\u00e9cies animais (porco preto e gado), sequestro de carbono, redu\u00e7\u00e3o da eros\u00e3o do solo, e habitat para esp\u00e9cies raras e end\u00e9micas, al\u00e9m de constituir um espa\u00e7o recreativo.<br \/><br \/>Com recurso \u00e0 intelig\u00eancia artificial, entre outras tecnologias, o sistema proposto permitir\u00e1 desenvolver mapas preditivos da dispers\u00e3o espacial do agente patog\u00e9nico e produzir as devidas recomenda\u00e7\u00f5es\/ a\u00e7\u00f5es em caso de surto da doen\u00e7a.
