According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 30-50% of production is lost due to pests and diseases and climate change is increasing this impact. At the same time, production has to support the increase in the world's population, which will double by 2050, at a time when chemically synthesized phytopharmaceuticals are being discontinued by the EU, which aims to reduce their use by 50% in the next 10 years. All these challenges are even greater in the Mediterranean area, one of the most threatened and for which there are the fewest solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olive groves are an ancient crop of great social and economic importance in the Mediterranean. Olive oil is one of Portugal's most exported products, with 75% of production coming from the Alentejo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of the main diseases of the olive grove are Gafa and Tuberculosis. Gafa is caused by the fungus <em>Colletothricum<\/em> sp., leads to production losses of up to 60-80%, corresponding to more than 50 million euros, a reduction in olive oil quality and is leading to the disappearance of the genetic heritage of important traditional Portuguese olive varieties such as the Galega, which is highly susceptible to the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tuberculosis, caused by the bacterium <em>Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. savastanoi <\/em>(Pss), is widespread in most olive groves, leading to a reduction in olive oil quality. The main methods of controlling these diseases are copper-based pesticides, which are not very effective, have adverse effects on the environment and the pathogens have developed resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"896\" height=\"597\" data-id=\"13334\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/the-olive-tree-5252751_1280-1.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C533\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13334\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"13423\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/antracnose-768x1024.jpg?strip=all\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13423\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"13425\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/tuberculose-1024x1024.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C800\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13425\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The production of medicinal cannabis (scientific name, <em>Cannabis sativa<\/em>) is growing in Portugal (including in the Alentejo), and the country is expected to become one of the world's largest producers. The greatest value lies in the flowers, which are rich in chemical compounds such as Tetra-Hydro-Cannabinol (THC) and Cana-Bi-Diol (CBD). The rest of the biomass is considered waste, i.e. a by-product, which legally has to be destroyed, entailing high costs. Cannabis contains more than 500 chemical compounds, some with unexplored antibacterial, antifungal and insecticidal properties. By efficiently managing the surplus biomass of medicinal cannabis, it will be possible to develop effective and sustainable solutions for controlling diseases that affect olive groves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"13318\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/richard-t-yovhXPl8V1M-unsplash-2-1024x683.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C534\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13318\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1822\" height=\"1366\" data-id=\"13330\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/matthew-brodeur-qcCPIhhdgTw-unsplash-1-edited-1.jpg?strip=all&resize=800%2C600\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13330\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"13332\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/girl-with-red-hat-v_PScjuMZ8w-unsplash-edited-2-scaled.jpg?strip=all&w=800\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13332\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SYNOPSIS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project<strong> ValorCannBio: Valorization of medicinal cannabis by-products as a biopesticide for olive groves<\/strong>, led by InPP, in partnership with the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (<a href=\"https:\/\/laqv.requimte.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LAQV requimte<\/a>) of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fct.unl.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NEW FCT<\/a>) and the companies GreenBePharma (<a href=\"https:\/\/greenbepharma.com\/pt-pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GBP<\/a>) - production of medicinal cannabis and <a href=\"https:\/\/agrdeprado.eco\/pt-pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AGR Global<\/a> - cultivation and production of olive groves (from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deprado.eu\/pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">De Prado<\/a>), is one of the winners of the 6th edition of the Promove Program by <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacaolacaixa.pt\/pt\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">la Caixa\u201c Foundation\u201d<\/a>, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bancobpi.pt\/particulares\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BPI Bank<\/a> and the Foundation for Science and Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fct.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FCT<\/a>), in the category of innovative pilot projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project <strong>ValorCannBio<\/strong> is focused on olive groves and aims to control Gafa and Tuberculosis. The main objective of this project is to use the surplus biomass from the production of medicinal cannabis as a biopesticide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help control the two diseases that affect olive groves, the team of researchers involved in the project will develop sustainable and effective biopesticides (biofungicide and biocide) from the surplus biomass of the medicinal cannabis production process. This process will make it possible to meet the needs of olive growers, but also to open up a new value chain associated with the use of a by-product of the plant's production industry for medicinal purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, new methods of extracting bioactive compounds from cannabis will be developed, based on green chemistry, i.e. using sustainable solvents. Complementary to this strategy, the aim is to explore the community of microorganisms such as bacteria that colonize the interior of plant tissues without causing damage to the cannabis plant (known as endophytic bacteria), isolating bacteria with biological control agent properties to be developed as a biopesticide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OBJECTIVES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Valuing the cannabis plant as a biopesticide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Reduce the cost associated with destroying the cannabis plant after collecting the flowers and its carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Create value in a new market segment for the cannabis industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Contribute to reducing the use of chemically synthesized pesticides in olive groves and the environmental impact inherent in their application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. To help reduce the economic losses caused by anthracnose and tuberculosis in olive groves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. To preserve one of the country's main traditional olive varieties, the Galega, which is highly susceptible to gafa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ACTIVITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. O projeto permitir\u00e1 explorar os subprodutos da produ\u00e7\u00e3o de can\u00e1bis medicinal como biopesticidas sustent\u00e1veis e eficazes para controlar as principais doen\u00e7as do olival.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>O InPP assinala o Dia Nacional da Sustentabilidade com a apresenta\u00e7\u00e3o p\u00fablica do projeto ValorCannBio que procura contribuir para a Sustentabilidade atrav\u00e9s do desenvolvimento de biopesticidas sustent\u00e1veis para controlar duas das mais importantes doen\u00e7as do olival, uma cultura de extrema import\u00e2ncia econ\u00f3mica e social no Alentejo: a Gafa e a Tuberculose. A Gafa \u00e9 considerada priorit\u00e1ria, por causar perdas de produ\u00e7\u00e3o que podem atingir os 100 por cento a que correspondem mais de 50 milh\u00f5es de euros, a redu\u00e7\u00e3o da qualidade do azeite e estar a levar ao desaparecimento do patrim\u00f3nio gen\u00e9tico das variedades de olival tradicional como a galega, altamente suscet\u00edvel \u00e0 doen\u00e7a. A tuberculose, \u00e9 uma doen\u00e7a do olival que se espalha pela quase totalidade dos olivais e que reduz a qualidade do azeite.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Para contribuir para o controlo das duas doen\u00e7as que afetam o olival, a equipa de investigadores envolvida no projeto desenvolver\u00e1 um biopesticida a partir de folhas da planta de can\u00e1bis, consideradas excedentes do processo de produ\u00e7\u00e3o de can\u00e1bis medicinal em Portugal, que legalmente t\u00eam de ser destru\u00eddas. Este processo vai permitir atender \u00e0s necessidades dos olivicultores, mas tamb\u00e9m abrir uma nova cadeia de valor associada \u00e0 utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o de um subproduto da ind\u00fastria da produ\u00e7\u00e3o desta planta com fins medicinais.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cAs solu\u00e7\u00f5es existentes no mercado para combater a Gafa e a Tuberculose n\u00e3o s\u00e3o eficazes e recaem em grupos dos pesticidas de s\u00edntese qu\u00edmica, com impactos negativos no meio ambiente, e que est\u00e3o a ser descontinuados, pelo que \u00e9 premente encontrar alternativas. Por outro lado, as empresas de can\u00e1bis podem vir a escoar os excedentes da biomassa para uma futura ind\u00fastria produtora de biopesticidas, evitando os altos custos de destrui\u00e7\u00e3o e apostando numa economia circular. Este projeto visa a integra\u00e7\u00e3o dos conceitos de agricultura sustent\u00e1vel, aliados \u00e0 qu\u00edmica verde, para obten\u00e7\u00e3o de produtos mais amigos do ambiente\u201d, explica Ana Rita Duarte, investigadora do LAQV da Faculdade de Ci\u00eancias e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa |NOVA FCT.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>J\u00e1 para Cristina Azevedo, diretora do departamento de Novos Biopesticidas do laborat\u00f3rio colaborativo InPP, sediado em Elvas, \u201cao desenvolver biopesticidas de base biol\u00f3gica de subprodutos provenientes da uma ind\u00fastria em franca expans\u00e3o a n\u00edvel nacional, e nomeadamente no Alentejo, o ValorCannBio contribuir\u00e1 para as metas estabelecidas pela Comiss\u00e3o Europeia na Estrat\u00e9gia do Prado ao Prato e da Biodiversidade, da redu\u00e7\u00e3o de 50 por cento do uso de pesticidas de s\u00edntese qu\u00edmica at\u00e9 2050\u201d.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>A diretora de departamento do InPP assegura ainda que \u201ctodos os impactos do ValorCannBio ser\u00e3o inicialmente sentidos no concelho de Elvas onde o projeto se vai desenvolver.
