Associated with diseases that have been devastating for agriculture, this bacterium affects a wide variety of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants - common in urban and rural spaces or of high economic value - that can be host to this bacterium, such as olive, grapevine, almond, citrus, cork oak, acacia, walnut, plane tree, rosemary or rosemary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <em>X. fastidiosa<\/em> lives inside the plant, more specifically in the xylem vessels that transport water and nutrients from the roots to the stems and leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its transmission can come from human activity, through the transportation of contaminated plants, but also from an infected plant to a healthy one, through insect vectors that are \u2018specialists\u2019 in feeding on the sap in the xylem of plants, such as leafhoppers, which pierce the xylem of the plant to extract water and nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given that these insect vectors play a fundamental role in the spread of <em>X. fastidiosa<\/em>, It is necessary to collect data on the seasonal development and life cycle of vectors to support a quantitative approach to risk assessment, as well as the development of integrated pest management measures to control vectors in the field, both in conventional and organic farming systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"12256\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_6901-edited.jpg?strip=all&w=800\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12256\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"11372\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_6352-1-edited.jpg?strip=all&w=800\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11372\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"12254\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Empoasca-vitis_Christophe-Quintin-on-Flickr_cropped-1024x679-1-edited.jpg?strip=all&w=800\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12254\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OBJECTIVES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The XVectors.pt project - Biology of insect vectors that feed on xylem sap and potential vectors of <em>Xylella fastidiosa<\/em> in Portugal aims to study foam leafhoppers, a group of insects with several species present throughout Europe and very common in Portugal (e.g. <em>Philaenus spumarius<\/em>, <em>Neophilaenus campestris<\/em>). These insects feed on the xylem of a multitude of host plants, from trees to shrubs or herbaceous plants, and are considered by several experts to be the main vectors of <em>X. fastidiosa<\/em> in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In more detail, the specific objectives of this project are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contribute to knowledge of the feeding biology of insect vectors and potential vectors of <em>X. fastidiosa<\/em> in Portugal;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify the main insect vectors of <em>X. fastidiosa<\/em> in Portugal, particularly the most abundant species and those with the greatest potential risk;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The project also aims to relate meteorological variables to the spatial and temporal distribution of the various species of leafhoppers. Europeia para a Seguran\u00e7a dos Alimentos (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/pt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EFSA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>A visita \u00e0 cidade elvense pretendeu fazer um ponto de situa\u00e7\u00e3o sobre a implementa\u00e7\u00e3o do projeto XVectors.pt, em execu\u00e7\u00e3o no InPP e financiado pela EFSA.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>O projeto visa estudar a biologia dos insetos vetores da bact\u00e9ria <em>Xylella fastidiosa<\/em> em Portugal, como \u00e9 o caso das cigarrinhas-das-espumas, um dos principais insetos vetores da bact\u00e9ria, que desempenha um papel fundamental na propaga\u00e7\u00e3o desta na Europa. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>O diretor executivo do InPP, Pedro Fevereiro, a diretora do departamento de Monitoriza\u00e7\u00e3o e Diagn\u00f3stico de Pragas e Doen\u00e7as, Ilaria Marengo, e os investigadores Nuno Faria e Hadi Sheikhnejad, receberam a equipa e deram a conhecer o desenvolvimento do projeto XVectorspt. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Durante a
