{"id":3086,"date":"2021-02-23T16:56:11","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T16:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/?p=3086"},"modified":"2025-05-08T13:41:26","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T13:41:26","slug":"wheat-has-a-genetic-achilles-heel-for-rust","status":"publish","type":"eventos","link":"https:\/\/iplantprotect.pt\/en\/eventos\/trigo-tem-calcanhar-de-aquiles-genetico-para-a-ferrugem\/","title":{"rendered":"Wheat has a genetic Achilles heel against rust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Gene in common wheat that promotes the fungal diseases yellow rust and black rust identified.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team of researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jic.ac.uk\/\">John Innes Centre<\/a> identified a common wheat gene (<em>Triticum aestivum<\/em>), which acts as a promoter of yellow rust and black rust, fungal infections that attack this breadmaking cereal worldwide, in a very destructive way and with great economic impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disrupting the function of this gene makes wheat more resistant to these diseases, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jic.ac.uk\/news\/an-achilles-heel-for-wheat-rust-infection\/\">published news<\/a> on the website of that international center of excellence in Plant Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/easb4aajaue.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Yellow-rust-on-leaf-615x340_JIC-2.jpg?strip=all&resize=615%2C340\" alt=\"Yellow rust under the microscope\" class=\"wp-image-3087\" width=\"615\" height=\"340\"\/><figcaption>Yellow rust on a wheat leaf. \u00a9 John Innes Center<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In a study published in <em>The Plant Cell<\/em>, The scientists conclude that the gene, called TaBCAT1, is activated (becomes expressed) at an early stage of yellow rust infection - caused by the fungus <em>Puccinia striiformis<\/em> f.sp. <em>tritici. <\/em>When these fungi attack, they activate (induce) and deactivate specific genes to prevent the wheat from defending itself.
